Wyatt decided to talk with Maura, but she hardly ever stayed in his room long enough to carry on a conversation. He was at fault, but would she ever forgive him? Okay, so he’d been a little grouchy, as Kelly would say. How could he explain that he’d been dreaming about her, about their kiss…? Not only that, he liked having her around. She had become so much a part of his life.

The kids had, too.

Even Jeff had surprised him. Every day the boy had been cleaning up the wood scraps and sweet little Kelly sat with him in the afternoon reading to him, chatting away about her day. But when Maura came anywhere near him, she refused to say a word that wasn’t necessary. He’d hurt her and now he had to try to make her understand.

That night when she came in his room, he was waiting for her.

“Maura, I’d like a word with you.”

She paused at the door.

“Think you could come and sit down?” He motioned to the chair beside the bed. “I promise I won’t try anything, but we need to clear the air.”

She came across the room, but didn’t sit down. “If it’s about my leaving…”

“Yes, that’s one of the subjects I had in mind.”

She frowned. “I know it’s the end of the month…”

“Yes it is, that’s why I wanted to talk—”

“We can be moved out in a few days.” She started to leave, when he reached out and grabbed her arm to stop her. She stiffened and he released her, silently cursing her ex for causing her such fear.

“Maura, please, I’m trying to tell you that I don’t want you to leave.”

Her mouth opened, but she didn’t say anything for a long time. “You don’t?”

He shook his head. “How could I, after you’ve devoted the past week to taking care of me? What kind of man would toss you and the kids out after all you’ve done?”

He raised a hand before she could speak. “Don’t answer that. I know I haven’t been the greatest patient. You’ve had to put up with a lot since my fall. If you’re worried about me touching you again, you have my promise that won’t happen. There is no reason why I can’t continue to stay in the cottage and you and kids live here. Please, I’d like you to stay.”

Maura let out a sigh of relief. She’d been afraid to even hope for a reprieve. Of course there was still the problem of money, even more how this man affected her. She had to push aside these feelings and think about her children. “But I can’t afford to pay rent and I can’t take your charity, either.”

His voice was husky. “And I’m not giving it, Maura. I should be the one to pay you for nursing me. You didn’t even go to work the first three days of this week. I owe you, Maura. Please stay… At least until you can afford to move out.”

“Okay, I will,” Maura agreed, all the while knowing that when the time came, it was going to be even harder to leave.
